Overview & History

Cardiology department started functioning regularly since October 2000. Initially had one OP Day - Wednesday and was functioning in Medical College Chest Hospital with meagre facilities. Gradually Echocardiography, Treadmill machines and Holter machines were acquired for noninvasive work. Then the department was shifted to New Medical College Hospital. In 2017 Cath Lab and Cath ICU with seven beds was set up and Interventional Cardiology work started. In 2019 BCVT course with annual intake of four students was started and in 2020 DM Cardiology course with an annual intake of two students. Professor post was allotted in the year 2022 and a separate Coronary Care Unit with ten beds was started. Currently with only three faculty members the department is carrying out a mammoth amount of patient care and teaching. 41549 patients attended Cardiology OP in the last one year. There were 10785 consultations from other departments. 15302 Echocardiograms, 2128 Treadmill tests, 952 Advanced Echocardiograms, 44 Trans esophageal Echos and 681 Holter tests were done  in last one year. On the interventional side, a total of more than 5000 Angiograms and 2500 Angioplasties have been done so far. 910 Coronary angiograms, 769 angioplasties, 32 Pacemaker Implantations, and 3 ASD closures were done in last one year apart from other procedures like IVUS, FFR, Right Heart Cath, Peripheral angioplasty and pericardial aspiration.

Academic Activities

• For DM residents - three classes per week - one clinical case discussion, one seminar and one journal club apart from teaching in OP, IP, Cath lab and ECHO rooms
• For DM residents- monthly once - a one day class by outside faculty which includes case discussions and discussions on ECG, ECHO, Cath data and Angiograms
• For BCVT students – weekly two seminars apart from teaching in ECHO, TMT and Cath lab
• For MD (Medicine) students - one class in a week
